There are several oral antifungal agents to choose from when assessing the risk–benefits associated with a particular treatment for onychomycosis; griseofulvin, ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine, although only three have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Antifungal creams, liquids or sprays (also called topical antifungals) These are used to treat fungal infections of the skin, scalp and nails. They include clotrimazole , econazole , ketoconazole , miconazole , tioconazole , terbinafine , and amorolfine .
Polyene antifungals are not absorbed when given orally, so are used to treat fungal infections of the gastrointestinal tract, such as oral thrush. It can be given intravenously for treatment of systemic fungal infections. Azole antifungals are synthetic, fungistatic agents with broad-spectrum activity.

Oral itraconazole (Sporanox™) is a very useful broad spectrum antifungal drug. It should be taken after a fatty meal, preferably with an acidic drink such as orange juice. Dosing regimes depend on the skin condition, its duration and severity, and need for prophylaxis.
Fluconazole is another broad-spectrum antifungal in the triazole class. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in ren with systemic fungal infections. The safety profile is very good; it has no known significant carcinogenic potential.
